Salthill/Knocknacarra power into semi-finals
John Boylan and Seamie Crowe found the net to give the seasiders a 2-3 to 1-4 lead at half-time, and further goals from Galway hurler Aonghus Callanan and substitute Conor Treacy in injury-time sealed the 4-12 to 2-6 win for Gerry Hughes’ side.
Garreth Bradshaw had given Moycullen the lead with a fine point after three minutes, but Boylan goaled for Salthill/Knocknacarra two minutes later to set them on the road to victory.
Tom Burke and Crowe added two quick points to extend their lead and when Crowe found the net after 14 minutes Salthill/Knocknacarra held a 2-2 to 0-1 advantage.
However, three points in-a-row from Moycullen and a splendid goal from Bradshaw, who rifled to the net after a lengthy solo run, gave Moycullen some hope as they trailed by just two at the break.
However, Salthill/Knocknacarra upped their efforts after the restart and Crowe added two points in the first couple of minutes, before Callanan hit their third goal to kill off Moycullen.
A Conor Bohan point from play and a well finished Christopher Hurney goal five minutes from time brought Moycullen back to within seven points, but substitute Treacy found the net once more to seal victory.
After needing extra time to overcome Bearna in last week’s third round, Corofin will now need a replay to make it to their fourth Galway football final in-a-row as two points in injury-time sealed the second chance for Claregalway.
Claregalway, who lined out with former Mayo inter-county stars David Heaney at full-back and James Nallen at midfield, were dominated in the opening half and trailed by 0-9 to 0-5 at the break.
However, they managed to hold Corofin to just two points in the second half and four points from the boot of county goalkeeper Adrian Faherty, who played at full-forward, was enough to seal a draw.
Early on the sides exchanged scores as Alan O’Donovan for Corofin and Brian Moran found their target with frees. Damien Burke was to the fore for Corofin with two points from play for Corofin but was denied a 24th minute goal for a square ball infringement.
Despite trailing by four points at the break, Claregalway were buoyed with the wind at their back after the restart. Former Galway midfielder Barry Cullinane reduced the deficit to three a minute after the break and Faherty landed a 45 and a free from 48m, which drew Claregalway within one.
O’Donovan landed a free for Corofin and substitute Thomas Costello pointed from play as Corofin pushed two clear, but Faherty hit his fourth point of the game deep into injury-time and wing-back Conor Glynn completed the comeback as Claregalway lived to fight another day.
Elsewhere, Milltown turned on the style to seal a 1-14 to 0-8 victory over An Cheathru Rua at Pearse Stadium yesterday and remain on course for their first county title in 30 years.
Milltown played with the wind in the opening half and tore into the Gaeltacht men. Damien Brennan missed a great goal chance after two minutes for Milltown, but Michael Martin goaled for the north Galway side and put them in the driving seat.
Despite Milltown taking control with the goal Niall Ó Briain kept An Cheathru Rua in touch with some well-taken points as they trailed by just three as half-time approached.
However, two scores on the bounce for Milltown just before the break, including a fine one from play by Darren Mullahy sent Milltown in 1-7 to 0-5 up at half time.
And at the start of the second half Martin tagged on another point which killed off the challenge of An Cheathrú Rua.
