Walsh pounces at the death for Tipp

Nicole Walsh pointed a free with just two minutes remaining to snatch the honours for the home side after a titanic tussle with Kilkenny.

The winners got off to a brilliant start with a fourth-minute goal by Sarah Fryday but failed to score for the remainder of the half as Kilkenny dominated proceedings.

Points from Claire Phelan, Orla Hanrick and Aisling Curtis had the teams level by the time Phelan goaled in the 11th minute after Lydia Fitzpatrick split open the Tipperary defence with a blistering run.

With Grace Walsh dominant at centre-back, Kilkenny continued to drive forward and a Hanrick goal on the stroke of half time had them in a commanding position at the interval, leading by 2-6 to 1-0.

The task of turning around that nine-point deficit was helped considerably by Fryday, when the senior player goaled three minutes after the resumption. When Michaela Graham buried to the net 10 minutes later, the margin was down to two.

A Tara Kennedy point reduced it to the minimum but Fitzpatrick slotted a 45 followed by a free to put three between them again.

Crucially though, Walsh restored parity with a 52nd-minute goal. Kilkenny’s Emma Kavanagh and Tipperary’s Alice Fogarty exchanged scores before Walsh came up trumps to clinch the honours.

Meanwhile, Limerick came out on top of a tough battle with Antrim to win the minor B final in Ashbourne, 4-10 to 2-8.

The Shannonsiders goaled through Martina McMahon and Niamh Ryan to lead by 2-6 to 2-5 at the break, with Ruby Marie Rice having scored for Antrim.

When Caoimhe Costello goaled, Limerick kicked on in the final 10 minutes and Ryan bagged her second goal to confirm the result.
