Limerick’s dual stars return to football panel

LIMERICK manager Maurice Horan has confirmed dual players Stephen Lucey and Mark O’Riordan have returned to the football panel ahead of Sunday’s All-Ireland SFC quarter-final against Kerry.

Limerick’s dual stars return to football panel

Horan revealed he contacted the players to invite them back into the set-up following the hurlers’ All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Dublin on Sunday night. The pair will train with the panel this week and are available for selection despite rarely featuring for the footballers this year.

“They haven’t played much football, that’s the only thing,” said Horan. “They tried to juggle the commitments this year but couldn’t with injuries and that sort of thing. But they have played plenty of times for Limerick, especially in Munster finals. The experience they have is huge.”

Horan knows full well the prospect of facing Munster champions Kerry for the second time in eight weeks is a daunting one. Likewise, a first All-Ireland quarter-final for the Shannonsiders and in Croke Park have added to Limerick’s task. However, Horan believes it’s key for his side not to be daunted by what lies ahead.

“We were overawed on June 4,” he stated of the last meeting between the sides. “We were blown out of the water and it took us a while to recover from that. But we’re here now and we have to start thinking this is just another game of football, no matter what the venue or occasion is. It’s vital that we play our own game.”

Limerick and Kerry’s quarter-final, which throws-in at 2pm on Sunday and will be shown live on RTE2, forms the first part of a double-header with Cork facing Connacht champions Mayo at 4pm, a game which will be broadcast live by TV3. The previous day, Donegal and Kildare will go head-to-head in the other quarter-final of the weekend. That game has a 6pm throw-in and will be televised by RTE2. Tyrone and Roscommon’s delayed fourth round qualifier acts as the curtain-raiser to it with a 4pm start. The winners of the remaining backdoor game will face Dublin in the last of the quarter-finals in Croke Park on Saturday week (7pm, RTÉ2).
