Limerick keen to keep O’Grady in charge for another year
O’Grady has strenuously insisted he won’t extend his term into 2012 although he has revitalised Limerick’s fortunes this year, guiding them back to Division 1 at the first time of asking and reaching the last six in this year’s championship.
Limerick were also mere seconds away from beating Waterford and reaching a Munster final and board officials are understood to be very keen to persuade him to stay at the helm.
O’Riordan stated the board have yet to broach the matter formally but suggested they will endeavour to keep him on board.
“Nothing has been discussed as of yet,” he said.
“The county board haven’t made any statement on it but speaking as an individual, I would imagine they’d be in favour of asking him to stay on.”
Former Limerick manager Richie Bennis has called on the board to do everything in their power to retain O’Grady’s services.
“I wouldn’t just give him one more year, I’d give him another two,” said Bennis. “If he goes after one year it would only be wasting our time. Limerick hurling is in a better place now. Nothing has been written in stone about whether he’s staying or not.”
Bennis is not a huge fan of the brand of hurling played by Limerick under O’Grady. However, he’s not in a position to complain about the results it’s garnered.
“He’s doing a fantastic job. It’s not my style of hurling and Limerick hurlers are different to Cork hurlers and he had huge success with them.
“But I’m never going to complain about how a Limerick team plays as long as their winning.
“You can’t disagree with success.
“When someone of Donal O’Grady’s calibre comes in as Limerick manager you have to buy into his style of hurling and that is what Limerick have done.”
