Morris: Big ball is growing in Wexford

WEXFORD star Colm Morris believes more young players are concentrating on football following the success of the county’s senior side.

Morris: Big ball is growing in Wexford

Jason Ryan’s men advanced to a second Leinster SFC final in four years with victory over Carlow in Croke Park on Sunday. Coupled with the U21 side securing a first provincial title in April, these are glory days for football in the county.

That was reflected in their squad, with youngsters like Liam Óg McGovern and Michael O’Regan on the bench at Croke Park — four days after helping the county’s U21 hurlers qualify for the Leinster decider.

Morris said: “We’re getting a lot more dual players committing to senior football. We had the likes of Liam Óg McGovern, Michael O’Regan and Conor Carty, lads that could commit to hurling if they wanted. But we’re happy to have them on board. The future of Wexford football will be bright.”

The 32-year-old knows he has few opportunities left to claim a Leinster senior medal and is determined to seize the chance on Sunday week against Dublin.

“It would be the peak of my career. But it should be everyone’s swansong.

“Wexford don’t get to too many Leinster finals so everyone will have to treat it as if they might not get there again. I was captain in 2008 and we had a good first half that day but got blown away in the second half. I don’t think it was so much fitness, I don’t think we had the belief. We lost probably four or five Leinster semi-finals in a row and maybe our aim all those years was to get to a Leinster final. But Jason (Ryan, manager) has brought a belief that we can actually play in Leinster finals, play in league finals and be competitive in all games.

“Now we want to win Leinster finals. We have lost enough.”
