ALL-IRELAND U-14 Féile na nGael champions, Galway’s Turloughmore were pipped 0-6 to 0-5 by Taghmon/Camross of Wexford in the opening round of matches of this year’s competition in Co Galway yesterday.

Hundreds of young players and handballers braved the heavy rain to participate in the opening parade in Loughrea last night.

Galway champions Clarinbridge laid down a marker with a 3-6 to 1-2 win over Waterford’s Ballygunner. Cork’s Blackrock defeated Galway’s Gort 6-10 to 0-2; Kilkenny’s O’Loughlin Gaels saw off St Thomas of Galway 6-16 to 0-1 and Na Piarsaigh from Limerick scoring a 5-11 to 0-1 win over Killimor.

One of the better games in the opening round saw Galway’s Castlegar defeat Drom and Inch from Tipperary 4-5 to 2-5.

The competition continues at venues throughout Co Galway today and the finals take place at Pearse Stadium, Salthill tomorrow.
