No date set yet for Murphy departure

CORK chairman Jerry O’Sullivan last night informed board delegates that no decision had yet been made in relation to when current secretary Frank Murphy will step down from his role.

It was announced at a board meeting in September 2009 that Murphy’s tenure would come to an end over the course of the following two years and while no definitive decision has yet been made on the issue, O’Sullivan revealed that he is hopeful of developments arising shortly.

“We have not forgotten about this issue”, stated O’Sullivan in response to a query from a board delegate. “There is a sub-committee working away on the issue and they’ll continue to work on that. We’ll be letting you know in due course.”

O’Sullivan also insisted at last night’s county board meeting ‘that there is no great appetite’ for the All-Ireland junior football and intermediate hurling at national level and believes the current intermediate hurling system is weighted heavily against the county. O’Sullivan was speaking to delegates in the wake of Cork’s Munster IHC semi-final defeat against Clare last Sunday in the Gaelic Grounds.

Cork and Kilkenny were the only counties this year who fielded players at intermediate hurling level drawn from junior and intermediate clubs with the remainder of the counties fielding second-string sides including players from senior clubs.

“I believe there is no great appetite at Croke Park level for these intermediate hurling and junior football competitions”, stated O’Sullivan. “They have been very good competitions to Cork but other counties do not feel the same way. What I do believe is that the system at intermediate hurling level at the moment is a total injustice and imbalance towards Cork. Other counties field B teams but we are not allowed to do that.”

O’Sullivan also told delegates that there had been no developments on the appointment of the next Cork minor hurling manager. Outgoing boss John Considine had his two-year term draw to a close when Cork exited the Munster MHC at the hands of Tipperary last month. The search for a new manager has yet to commence but O’Sullivan revealed that he was hopeful to have news for delegates at the next meeting.

Club fixtures for the next few weeks were finalised at last night’s meeting while in the latest list of notice of transfer motions, the proposed move of former Cork footballer Paul O’Flynn from Ballyclough to Bishopstown for hurling only was announced.
