Kilmallock’s early blitz decisive
On that occasion, former Clare senior hurling manager Tony Considine was in charge of Garryspillane but for the last two seasons, the Irish Examiner columnist has being guiding the fortunes of Kilmallock.
This time a first half goal rush saw Considine’s new charges ease past his former side in their second round clash.
Inside 18 minutes Kilmallock led 4-4 to 0-3 and they strolled to a 5-15 to 0-14 victory in Bruff.
Inter-county man Graeme Mulcahy helped himself to 2-3, while recently retired Limerick star Andrew O’Shaughnessy bagged 1-3.
At half-time it was 4-4 to 0-10, with Donie Ryan frees keeping Garryspillane within touching distance.
But in the second half Kilmallock added a flurry of points and Kevin O’Donnell scored their fifth goal.
Also on Friday night, Ahane were 1-15 to 1-9 winners over Knockainey in Claughaun. Richard Ryan scored a first half goal for Ahane, who led 1-6 to 0-3 at half time.
Niall Moran accounted for the majority of his sides scores from frees, while his brother Ollie fired over three points from full forward. Patrick Kirby replied with frees for Knockiney, but it doesn’t appear as though the All Blacks will be repeating their semi-final appearance of last season.
On Saturday evening, Bruff were 2-12 to 1-10 winners over Granagh-Ballingarry in Ballyagran.
Bruff can thank Paddy O’Leary’s return of 2-3 and the free-taking of Shane Bulfin.
But it was Granagh-Ballingarry who got off to a flyer, with Eoin Kennedy goaling inside one minute.
By half-time the sides were level, 1-6 apiece.
Donal O’Grady’s points kept his side in touch until O’Leary’s second goal propelled Bruff over the winner’s line.
Also on Saturday, Fitzgerald Park in Kilmallock hosted a double-header.
Intermediate champions Hospital-Herbertstown got their first win in the top flight with a 1-15 to 0-10 win over South Liberties.
The second game was a repeat of the 2009 county final between Adare and Na Piarsaigh. But there was no seperating the teams as it finished 2-10 to 0-16 with Shane Dowling (free) and David Breen points securing the draw.
After leading at half time Adare went 20 minutes in the second half without a score.
Last evening in Ballingarry, last season’s beaten finalists Emmets eased past Patrickswell, 1-15 to 2-12.
Padraig Leahy set them on their way with a third minute penalty and they led 1-14 to 1-5 at half time.
Minor Mark Carmody goaled in reply for Patrickswell. However the points continued to flow on the resumption, with Paul Neenan, Leahy, and Eoin Walsh leading the way.
Limerick goalkeeper Nicky Quaid lined out at midfield and contributed three points.
Elsewhere, a second half Conor Allis goaled sealed a Croom comeback against Bruree. Bruree led 0-8 to 0-6 at half time but Croom held out for a 1-12 to 0-13 win.
In the final game in Caherconlish, Doon were 3-15 to 1-12 victors in the east Limerick derby after they led 2-6 to 1-5 at the interval.
