Cahill: Opportunity for us to show our ‘true worth’

ANTRIM manager Dinny Cahill has told his charges they have a chance to show their “true worth” after disappointing in the second-half of their Leinster SHC quarter-final defeat to Wexford.

The Tipperary native was left dumbstruck by the mediocrity of his side’s display after the interval in Wexford Park last month and believes they have to realise they can make amends in Casement Park today.

“I was mystified by our second-half showing against Wexford but we have the chance to show our true worth,” said Cahill.

“We have home advantage and we must make the most of it.

“Westmeath played well before being beaten by Galway and they have already beaten Carlow so they will be up for battle.”

Cahill won’t forget that Antrim struggled to beat Westmeath in Mullingar in March when things were decidedly gloomier for the Lake County.

After putting Galway to the pin of their collars, Westmeath are enjoying a new lease of life under interim manager Brian Hanley.

Speaking on Newstalk last Saturday, the Athenry man spoke about already formulating three styles of hurling for his team, which they have switched to and from during games.

Their tails are up, as exemplified by what Hanley has to say about he’s anticipating from his team today.

“I won’t be hoping for a big performance from Westmeath in this game, I will be expecting it,” said an emphatic Hanley.

Antrim are aware Westmeath see them as a decent scalp to take.

“We’ve always had problems with Westmeath,” explained CJ McGourty. “People are saying — and it’s natural enough — that it’s a good draw, but Westmeath are sitting saying the same thing.

“If they had a pick, I’m sure they would have picked Antrim or Laois.”

Westmeath dual star Paul Greville plays his fourth game in five weeks today after lining out for the footballers in Wexford last weekend.

A sixth is likely to be on the cards at the same venue next Saturday when the two counties play in a first round All-Ireland qualifier.
