Dublin must tame Cats to win much needed respect

DUBLIN, everyone else’s team of the league, against Kilkenny, my team of the league.

Yes, I know Dublin have had their share of injuries, but look at the galaxy of stars that Brian Cody’s side have been forced to field without at various times this year – John Tennyson, Henry Shefflin, Jackie Tyrell, JJ Delaney, Tommy Walsh, Brian Hogan, Richie Power, Eoin Larkin, etc., etc.

And still, they top the class. Favourites here then? Well, no, I wouldn’t go that far. The point is that to have even qualified for the final, never mind topping the table, already represents a massive achievement for Kilkenny in this league.

Yes, they’ll be out to win it, now that they’re in the final, and only a fool would write them off. But, remember, they are far from being at full strength. If they were, I’d have them as winners here, but now, with so many struggling, with Dublin going so well, different set of circumstances entirely.

Man for man this Dublin team can match up to anyone in hurling at the moment, even a full-strength Kilkenny. But – and I hate to say this – there is still a mental weakness. Anthony Daly points to the wides Dublin hit in a couple of big games in the league and sees the positives of creating opportunities. I look at the wides, however, and view the chances not taken and ask why?

Stage fright? Lack of confidence? Fear of winning?

If they’re to win respect from their peers, if they’re to win self-respect (equally important), Dublin must win tomorrow.
