Mayo fans’ club upset by allegations

MAYO’S Dublin supporters’ club has rejected notions of financial impropriety.

The county’s clubs questioned why there was no return by the fundraisers in 2008 on the county board accounts at a meeting on Monday night. One delegate asked what the Revenue Commissioner would make of it when informed the money was sent directly to the teams. However, the supporters rejected the accusation.

“We absolutely reject such allegations which are without any foundation whatsoever and damaging to the reputation and professionalism of each of our committee members,” a statement read last night.

“Club Mayo Dublin was established in February 2008 with the support of Mayo GAA County Board to enable Dublin-based Mayo GAA fans to support, in an organised manner, the preparation and efforts of our county teams through the generous financial support of our members.

“Our affairs are entirely transparent to the executive committee of Mayo GAA County Board and to our members. The significant contributions which we have made and continue to make to various projects and expenses incurred, most particularly in the preparation of the Mayo senior football team, are at all times reported to our members and to the treasurer of Mayo GAA County Board.”

The Dublin-based supporters also refuted rumours that they were involved in picking the manager last year.

“In late 2010 there were numerous references to Dublin supporters being involved in the selection process of the new senior manager. It had no substance but, after consideration, it was decided best not to respond in a public way as it would most likely only give airtime to a story that did not merit discussion and create further unnecessary distraction around the selection.”

Meanwhile, St Finbarr’s, Cork and Cuchullains, Dunloy in Antrim will host the launches of the All-Ireland SFC and SHC respectively next month.
