McGarrity a Mayo doubt

MAYO’S experienced midfielder Ronan McGarrity is rated as ‘very doubtful’ for Sunday’s Allianz Division 1 league match against All-Ireland champions Cork after injuring his leg in training.

McGarrity a Mayo doubt

The 29-year-old sat out Thursday night’s squad session and missed his club’s opening senior league tie last weekend.

If McGarrity is out, Seamus O’Shea and Barry Moran (who lined out with their clubs last weekend after recovering from ankle and knee injuries respectively) will be in contention for the vacant midfield spot. James Kilcullen, Jason Gibbons and Tom Parsons, who started against Dublin, are the other players in line to start in the centre.

Elsewhere, Tom Cunniffe was forced off during Castlebar’s league game last weekend with a ‘tight hamstring’ while a similar injury sidelined Neil Douglas. Their club-mate Alan Feeney also sat out that match with a foot injury but all three players are expected to be ready for Sunday.

Meanwhile, Aidan O’Shea has recovered from the calf strain that prevented him from playing against Dublin but Trevor Howley and Donal Vaughan are not yet ready to be part of the squad.

Mayo are expected to name their team after training on Friday night.

“The last two league games are important,” said Mayo manager James Horan. “It’s probably going to come down to the last match against Monaghan for us but we’ll be doing everything we can to win on Sunday.”
