Moynihan hails heroes after battling win

CRÍOST RÍ manager Aidan Moynihan was elated at the final whistle of yesterday’s Corn Uí Mhuirí decider after overseeing his charges claim the school’s 16th title in the competition.

Moynihan hails heroes after battling win

“The lads have been pushed to the edge in every game to date this season, and it stood to us again today,” he said.

“We were happy enough at half-time to be ahead by five points considering the incident at the start. But we were very concerned when they got their goal early in the second half. At least it came at a time when we were able to come back to recover. We ground it out in the second half and got to grips with things.”

Luke Connolly commanded the headlines with eight second-half points but Moynihan was eager to apportion praise elsewhere as well.

“You won’t score unless you’ve possession and my main man in the second half was Shane O’Keeffe. He was providing the ball. I could have killed Luke there for the late penalty. He was told to put that over the bar but went for goal. Then he came out, from the resultant 45, and put that over the bar.

“But look, he showed his talent out there with the points he kicked today.”

A disappointed Dingle manager John Flannery admitted the early sending-off of Pádraig Ó Sé put his team in a tough spot.

“We lost a Kerry minor who was sent off and then another who went off with a recurrence of a cruciate injury so it was a big ask tocome back in the second half,” he said. “We’re very proud of the second-half performance after being five points down at half-time. But we produced a great effort in the first 15 minutes of the second half to go ahead. I think the extra legs just paid off for Críost Rí in the end.

“The injury at the start threw both sides for a bit and the first half wasn’t great. It was unsettling for lads and it was difficult to get them going again after the delay. I think the second half was a better spectacle. Look, the lads gave it everything. There’s about 10 or 11 of them underage next year and they’ll be back to give it a good shot.”
