McDonnell and Ellis get starting spots for Cork

CORK manager Denis Walsh has introduced defensive newcomers Stephen McDonnell and Mark Ellis to his team for their Allianz Division 1 Hurling League match with Offaly at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday. Glen Rovers player McDonnell gets the nod at right corner-back while Millstreet hurler Ellis will line out at centre-back.

Walsh has only named seven of the team that started in last August’s All-Ireland semi-final defeat by Kilkenny, with goalkeeper Anthony Nash, left half-back Ray Ryan, midfielders Jerry O’Connor and William Egan, centre-forward Patrick Cronin and full-forward Paudie O’Sullivan all drafted into the side.

Meanwhile, Limerick boss Donal O’Grady has recalled ten players who opted out of the county panel last season under former manager Justin McCarthy in his team for their Allianz Division 2 Hurling League opener against Clare on Sunday afternoon.

Damien Reale, Stephen Lucey, Wayne McNamara, Seamus Hickey, David Moloney, Donal O’Grady, Richie McCarthy, James Ryan, Niall Moran and Andrew O’Shaughnessy all return to the county senior team for the clash. Left half-back David Breen, midfielder Paul Browne and corner-forward Graeme Mulcahy are survivors from the 2010 side while, intriguingly, last year’s midfielder Nicky Quaid will line out in goal. The team is completed by full-forward Kevin Downes, who makes his intercounty senior debut after starring for Ard Scoil Rís and Limerick underage sides in recent seasons.

Galway boss John McIntyre includes two new faces in his line-up for Sunday’s Division 1 battle with Wexford in Pearse Stadium. Gerard O’Halloran starts at corner back with Loughrea player Johnny Coen coming in at corner-forward. Ger Mahon returns to the team at left half-back and McIntyre has named Cappataggle’s Damien Joyce as his captain for the coming season.

Wexford manager Colm Bonnar has drafted in five new faces for the trip to Galway. Niall Breen takes over in goal with Matthew O’Hanlon making his league debut at full-back. Colin Farrell is joined at midfield by newcomer Brendan Doyle with Keith Burke also getting a call up at full-forward.
