Moynihan, Fitzgerald among Sigerson greats

UCD and UCC make up the lion’s share of players named on the Ulster Bank Sigerson Cup Team of the Century announced yesterday.

With six representatives, UCD head the list, followed by UCC with four, the Kerry quartet of Seamus Moynihan, Brendan Lynch, Maurice Fitzgerald and Jim Brosnan. Along with UCD pair John O’Keeffe and Jackie Walsh, the Kingdom have the largest county proportion on the team with six while Cavan and Mayo are next best with two each.

Using a combination of historical records, including contemporary press reports, personal knowledge of players dating back to the 1940s and anecdotal evidence, the selection committee chose players who they felt represented their colleges with distinction in the Ulster Bank Sigerson Cup competition during the last century.
