Mullane assured of safety for honeymoon stay

WATERFORD hurler John Mullane and his fiancée Stephanie Power have been given reassurances their honeymoon stay at the same Mauritius hotel where Michaela McAreavey was murdered last week will be safe.

Mullane assured of safety for honeymoon stay

The De La Salle man, who is set to get married in April before they stay at the Legends Hotel for eight nights, admitted the pair had considered canceling it. However, they have since been ensured by their travel agency that they have nothing to fear travelling to the Indian Ocean island resort where last week’s tragedy struck.

“We were worried about it and Stephanie was really concerned but we’ve decided that we’re going to go ahead with it,” said Mullane.

“What happened to Michaela was tragic. It was a freak, one-in-a-million thing and you couldn’t help but feel sympathy for her husband and the Harte family. The travel agency have helped to put our minds at rest but Stephanie was put off it for a while.”

Mullane revealed he had initially decided on Mauritius and the Legends Hotel on the advice of team-mates Ken McGrath and Eoin Kelly who had enjoyed their honeymooned there.

“I was impressed with what they told me about the place and the hotel so I went with it,” he said.

Along with some of his De La Salle team-mates, Mullane flies across to Newcastle this weekend to celebrate his stag party. However, after that it’s all systems go for the Munster club champions as they count down to their AIB All-Ireland club SHC semi-final against Clarinbridge next month.

“I’d put the wedding on hold for the club if it came to that!” Mullane joked. “No, seriously, things are going well and everything is where we want it to be. I have my stag this weekend and that will be a bit of craic but our eyes aren’t off February 19th. We’re going to have to be ready for it and it’s something that we’re really looking forward to.”
