MUNSTER GAA chiefs have placed Mallow on standby if the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick cannot host Sunday’s Club senior football final.

Provincial bosses will inspect the Shannonside venue on Friday morning to see if the pitch is playable for the Dr Crokes-Nemo Rangers clash as the cold snap envelops the region.

However, Munster Council PRO Jim Forbes admitted the condition of the field is just one factor which will be taken into account before a decision is made on whether or not the game will be played.

He explained: “Apart from looking at the pitch we must also take into account road conditions. Safety is of paramount importance for both the teams and the sets of supporters travelling to the match.

“So we will be looking at those issues along with long range forecasts in the region. Then we will hope that the improvement which is predicted will come to pass.”

Mr Forbes revealed that no covers are in place on the Gaelic Grounds pitch this week despite the drop in temperatures.

He continued: “We have a few alternative grounds on standby. Mallow is probably the preferred option as it is situated close to both teams and along a major road network which should be gritted. The advice to everyone is to pick up the paper on Saturday and listen to the radio over the weekend.”

He admitted the uncertainty is unwelcome but stressed that there was little that GAA officials can do given the conditions. He said: “If you can’t play the match, you can’t play the match. We have to get a window of opportunity and when we do, we have to take it. It is difficult for all the teams still involved especially in terms of training, etc.

“When teams get to this stage, I think they want to have if done and dusted before Christmas. It is a case of wait and see and hope this harsh weather begins to ease which would allow these games be played.”
