Tribesmen look set to reappoint McIntyre

GALWAY hurling boss John McIntyre is set tonight to be reappointed for another two years, as the Tribesmen bid to end their All-Ireland famine.

Galway have not won the All-Ireland title since 1988 and McIntyre will tonight be given the task of dethroning his native Tipperary in 2011.

McIntyre’s name will go before a meeting of Galway hurling board this evening and it is expected he will be given a new term, with his manager’s report having been favourably received earlier this month.

It is proposed that McIntyre will be appointed for a further two seasons but unlike his first term, the position will come up for review at the end of the first year.

Galway hurling board chairman Joe Byrne said: “We need continuity as there is a plan in place to take Galway hurling forward in the coming years.”

Meanwhile, Portumna’s quest for a fourth Galway SHC title in a row will be tested next weekend after they were drawn to play neighbours Mullagh in the quarter-finals.

Mullagh, beaten by a controversial point in the last minute of the semi-finals by Loughrea last year, have made huge progress in recent seasons. In the other quarter-finals, Craughwell will take on Loughrea, Clarinbridge will meet Tommie Larkins and Tynagh/Abbey/Duniry clash with Liam Mellows.
