’Haven snatch dramatic draw

THERE was pulsating drama at the death in Bandon last night as 13-man Castlehaven conjured up a stirring revival to snatch a draw, 2-7 to 0-13, against Ballincollig in the fourth round of the Evening Echo Cork SFC.

Roland Whelton’s dismissal for a second yellow card in the 56th minute looked to have killed off Castlehaven’s aspirations, after they had earlier in the half lost full-back Liam Collins when he was also sent-off for a second booking, and they trailed by 0-13 to 2-5.

But in the 59th minute Castlehaven were thrown a lifeline when they were awarded a hotly-contested penalty after a dubious foul on Bernie Collins.

Cork U21 star Mark Collins kept his composure to drill the ball to the net and two classy points by Stephen Hurley and Brian Hurley in injury-time tied the match up. Ballincollig, for whom Cork seniors Patrick Kelly and John Miskella notched five points between them, looked to have wrapped up the match with a strong third quarter display that saw them overturn a 1-4 to 0-6 half-time deficit.

But Castlehaven’s rally ensures the tie heads to a replay, which will be played after the All-Ireland final.

Douglas clawed back Carbery’s first-half lead and staged a storming finish that left the divisional side reeling at Cloughduv last evening when winning 0-15 to 1-9.

The city side elected to play Eoin Cadogan at centre-forward and it appeared they had found the right formula as they coasted into a 0-5 to 0-2 lead. But Carbery, with a goal and a point from midfielder Alan O’Connor, hit back with a seven-point turnaround in just four minutes to lead at half-time 1-6 to 0-5.

Cadogan went full-back for the second half and Cillian Hogan, who had a stormer in the No 3 jersey in the first-half, continued his good work out the field where Graham Canty’s replacement, Sean Levis, now found his wings clipped.

Mark Harrington, Cormac Dinneen and Alan Barry tacked on vital points that brought Douglas back into the game before Niall Heffernan and substitute Shane McCarthy provided the winning scores that sent Douglas into a quarter-final clash with Carbery Rangers.

A goal in the 58th minute from substitute TJ Bodie earned Duhallow a 2-8 to 1-9 victory over Aghada at Mourneabbey last night.

Having led 1-7 to 0-3 at half-time, thanks to 1-5 from Cian Fleming, Aghada turned around for the second half knowing they would be facing into a strong wind, but when they extended their lead early on they looked in a good position.

A goal from Niall Fleming in the 35th minute, followed by two quick points, turned the game in favour of the divisional side, however, though it was not until Bodie’s late intervention that they managed to put themselves into the lead.

It took a 45m free from Daniel Goulding to decide this fourth round Cork IFC game at Caherlag last evening in Éire Óg’s favour when beating Youghal 0-8 to 1-4.
