Cahill: pay student players

ANTRIM boss Dinny Cahill has called for intercounty players who are full-time students to be given a “wage” during the summer months to keep them at home during the championship season.

Cahill: pay student players

The Glensmen take on an injury-ravaged Cork side in the All-Ireland SHC quarter-final on Sunday but as Cahill pointed out, he has own difficulties.

“Antrim would love to have all their players for next Sunday as well,” Cahill said. “We lost two top defenders from our game against Offaly, Aaron Graffin and Neil McAuley, they went to America for the summer. They’re both college students, and with the times that are in it they needed to make money over their summer holidays.

“That’s an area where I think the GAA is slipping up; there’s a lot of money being generated by the top players, they should be looked after in circumstances like this. The GAA should put a structure in place to look after these young fellas, give them a wage over the holidays to enable them to stay at home.”
