Waterford duo make family history

HISTORY was made in Waterford’s All-Ireland qualifier defeat to Offaly in Tullamore on Saturday as the Déise finished the game with an attack that included sons of both the county chairman and secretary.

Stradbally’s Stephen Cunningham, whose father Tom is chairman, was sprung from the bench in the second half, and in the closing stages Clashmore’s Killian O’Keeffe, son of secretary Timmy, was also introduced.

PRO Joe Cleary said: “As far as our board is concerned it is definitely an historic first to have the sons of both the chairman and secretary playing in the same championship game for the county. It would be interesting to know if it has happened in any other county. We would preferred to have made our own piece of history by winning a football qualifier for the first time, but if Stephen and Killian’s introduction has been a championship first then we’ll take it.”
