Forward power propels Kilbrittain

Kilbrittain 2-15 Dromina 2-9

With an average age of just 21, the youthful trio bristled with enthusiasm all night, accounted for some splendid scores and racked up all but four points of their side’s tally.

David Desmond at right corner-forward was the pick of the lot with a fine haul of 1-5, each of his points as well executed as the next, while his goal on 48 minutes was the score that allowed them some breathing space after which they tacked on five more points in quick succession.

Up until then the West Cork side struggled to shake off a dogged Dromina outfit and were frequently forced into some wayward efforts, mainly through the majesty of 36-year-old Liam Hayes at centre-back.

In contrast, the Avondhu men were more economical, but struggled for headway in the second-half against a mean Kilbrittain defence, marshalled superbly by Ross Cashman at centre-back when deployed there.

The opening half was characterised by some fine individual displays. Desmond and Harrington caught the eye early on with a few sweet scores each while wing back Darren Hickey was also outstanding.

For Dromina, Pat Hayes and expert free-taker Andrew O’Shaughnessy linked up well and notched 1-4 of their first-half tally. Harrington had the first goal of the match on 13 minutes when he whipped home from close range after a quick delivery from Cashman but that was cancelled out on 27 minutes when O’Shaughnessy placed Hayes for a cracking goal. The sides were level at 1-5 apiece at the break.

It was very much nip-and-tuck for the early part of the second period. Dromina surged ahead through O’Shaughnessy and Gould on 37 minutes but with Wall and Desmond continuing to pose problems, Kilbrittain worked their way back.

Desmond blasted home from close range on 48 minutes and followed it up with three more to open up an eight-point margin, 2-14 to 1-9.

Dromina refused to wilt and had the final say with a goal from full-forward Paul Gould, who followed up O’Shaughnessy’s foiled penalty effort.
