Canty in fight to be fit
Canty has been plagued with injury problems this season with a shoulder knock incurred against Mayo in the league match in April in Páirc Uí Chaoimh the latest problem that he is contending with. Canty’s general fitness is up to standard but improving match sharpness is something he has to deal with.
“I’m fit but my match fitness is way down. It’s a matter of trying to get that up now, get your sharpness right. But time is something I don’t have to get right for the game next week. It’s an AC shoulder injury and I hurt it in the last league game against Mayo. It’s coming over the last two weeks though and improving. It’s still there and still niggling at me, so it’s just something you’ve to deal with now.
“I was just going through in that game and I took a knock before half-time. You could take 20 of those knocks off fellas and be grand. This time I wasn’t grand, unfortunately. It wasn’t an old problem or anything. It was just a new injury, another to add to the list. Most of my rehab is strengthening the muscles around the shoulders. I’m trying to take the pressure off the ligaments. When you have a bit of ligament damage you need to watch that. I’m in the pool and trying to strengthen that area. We’ll see how it goes as the week progresses.”
Meanwhile Cork manager Conor Counihan yesterday revealed Aidan Walsh picked up a finger injury lining out for Cork in a challenge against Laois on Friday. Walsh is now a doubt for Cork hurlers Munster U21HC quarter-final against Waterford on Wednesday and next Sunday’s SFC clash with Kerry.
Footballer of the year Paul Galvin again missed Kerry’s weekend training, increasing fears that he will not be ready for Sunday’s Fitzgerald Stadium clash. However suggestions Kieran Donaghy could miss the game with a groin strain are untrue.
Otherwise Kerry should be unchanged, with Mike Quirke and Seamus Scanlon in midfield, despite good form shown by David Moran and Anthony Maher.
