Blow for Cork as dual star Cadogan to miss league deciders
Cadogan has been suffering with an injury to his foot in recent weeks and, after the NHL Division 1 victory over Tipperary last Sunday week, the problem worsened.
He travelled with the hurling squad to Portugal last Wednesday for a five-day warm-weather training camp but was unable to partake in any of their training at the Algarve resort.
The extent of the injury has now been confirmed and he will be sidelined for Sunday week’s NFL Division 1 decider against Mayo in Croke Park and the NHL Division 1 showdown against Galway in Semple Stadium on May 2. The news represents a massive blow to both Cork hurling boss Denis Walsh and his football counterpart Conor Counihan with Cadogan now facing a race against time to be fit for both side’s respective championship openers.
It is hoped that Cadogan will recover in time for Cork’s Munster SHC quarter-final against Tipperary on May 30 and their Munster SFC semi-final clash against either Kerry or Tipperary a week later. However, at the moment, Cadogan is classed as a doubt for those games.
The injury is a major setback to the Douglas player himself as well after he has undergone a hectic season to date since choosing to combine both codes at senior level for the 2010 campaign. He will also now miss out for his club in the first round of the Cork SFC against Ballincollig on May 16.
Meanwhile, Dublin forward David Treacy is involved in a race against time to prove his fitness for Sunday’s crucial Allianz NHL clash with Limerick at Parnell Park.
The Cuala player stretched a hamstring in training last night and is considered doubtful for the make-or-break tie with the Shannonsiders. Dublin must gain a draw or a win from this game to preserve their Division 1 status for next season.
Galway will be without half forwards Eamonn Ryan and Cyril Donnellan for Sunday’s league game against Cork at Pearse Stadium. Ryan fractured his wrist in the Tribesmen’s game against Dublin, while Donnellan was sent off in that game and will be out of action for a period of four weeks.
Regular goalkeeper James Skehill is also set to miss the match because of a head injury he sustained in the win over Kilkenny at Nowlan Park.
Clare, who have safely qualified for the Division Two final, will be without Darach Honan and Gerry Quinn for their visit to Newbridge to take on Kildare on Sunday.
