A cousin of his namesakes Alan, Bernard and Paul, son to Jim and nephew to Bernard Snr, Brogan had spent the first five months of 2009 as a card-carrying member of Pat Gilroy’s senior football panel.

His debut was a memorable one – the rollicking NFL opener against Tyrone at Croke Park in front of a crowd of 79,000 which opened the GAA’s 125 celebrations.
