Meyler favourite for post as Kerry boss Carroll quits

KERRY hurling manager Mossie Carroll has stepped down from the post.

The former Limerick hurler, who replaced Pat Heffernan, had a mixed season with an injury ravaged Kingdom losing their NHL Division Two status before bowing out of the competition to eventual champions Carlow in the Christy Ring Cup semi-final.

County Board chairman Jerome Conway revealed that Carroll, who is based in Cork, had found his commute ‘excessive and wearing’

Conway explained: “Mossie Carroll took the job for one year and was totally committed to the job of work from a physical point of view and a hurling point of view.

“Unfortunately Mossie has found the travelling too much because he was in the car between five and six hours every time he came to training and he found that excessive and wearing.

“He has decided to take a break so we thank him and wish him well.

“The news of Mossie’s intentions not to take another term only reached us last week, so we are just weighing up our options now and seeing what we can do and we will have a name as soon as we possibly can.”

Former Wexford and Kerry boss John Meyler has been installed as favourite as he managed the Kerry U21 side to All-Ireland B glory this year and also coached the Kilmoyley minors to county championship success.
