Moran retires

LIMERICK hurling veteran Ollie Moran last night called time on his 12-year intercounty career at the age of 33.

Moran, a native of Ahane, first lined out for the county’s senior side, after graduating from U21 level, in 1997 in an NHL game against Kilkenny before helping Limerick to go on and win the league.

He eventually won an All Star in 2007 as the Treaty made an unlikely run to the All-Ireland SHC final, under Richie Bennis, before losing out to the Cats.

As well as the early league success, and senior county championship medals in 1998, ‘99 and 2004 with club Ahane, he claimed five Railway Cup medals with Munster.

Last night Limerick County Board paid tribute to the 33-year-old after a remarkable career in a green jersey.

“It is with regret that the Limerick County GAA Board have been informed of a decision by our senior hurling star Ollie Moran to retire from inter-county Hurling after a long and distinguished career.

“Ollie is one of life’s gentlemen and on behalf of the Board, wish Ollie, his wife, Lisa and baby son, David, the very best of luck in his retirement.”
