Mayo give McGarrity nod for decider

DESPITE receiving a broken cheekbone in a club game 11 days ago,Ronan McGarrity has been named on the Mayo team for Sunday’s Connacht SFC final against Galway in Pearse Stadium.

McGarrity picked up multiple fractures of his cheekbone in an off-the-ball incident in a championship game between his club Ballina and fierce rivals Crossmolina, an incident still under investigation by the Mayo County Board.

But he was given the preliminary go-ahead to start on Sunday, although his selection is subject to a fitness test on Sunday morning.

Should he fail that, Tom Parsons would appear to be best positioned to start in his place.

The Mayo team only shows one change from the side that started in last month’s trouncing of Roscommon – Liam O’Malley coming in for Donal Vaughan at right-corner back. However, O’Malley, just returning from an ankle injury, is also subject to a fitness test on the morning of the game.

Elsewhere the team remains unchanged. David Heaney holds his spot at midfield after being a surprise inclusion against Roscommon. Heaney, a member of the Mayo squad since 1997, will line up against Galway for the 10th time in the Connacht championship.

A fine display against Roscommon from Knockmore’s Aidan Kilcoyne means he keeps 2006 All Star Conor Mortimer off the team. The team shows eight changes in personnel from the side which lost last year’s Connacht final to the same opposition 2-12 to 1-14.

As expected, following their superb victory over Cavan last weekend, Wicklow have named an unchanged side for their All-Ireland SFC qualifier with Down at Aughrim on Saturday.

Meanwhile Laois manager Niall Rigney has named an unchanged side from the side that defeated Antrim for Saturday’s All-Ireland hurling qualifier against Limerick in Thurles.

Forwards Eoin Costelloe, Eamonn Jackman and Tommy Fitzgerald were all replaced during the second half of the Antrim game, but have been named in an unchanged line-up.
