LAST Saturday there was a march in Cork city to support the 2008 senior hurling panel. At least ten thousand people attended, and some estimates nudge the figure towards the twelve thousand mark.

Reference to those people was fleeting at last Tuesday night’s county board meeting, which is disappointing. Although the country is in economic meltdown, it appears to be difficult to motivate people to visible action against rapacious bankers and vacillating politicians.

Yet thousands of people took to the streets of the second-biggest city in the country last Saturday to back some sportsmen in what has become — even for people in Cork, or maybe particularly for people in Cork — a wearying, drawn-out wrangle.
