Cassidy gets nod to face Dublin

TYRONE manager Mickey Harte introduces one newcomer for tomorrow’s floodlit NFL opener against Dublin at Croke Park.

Harte has called up Aidan Cassidy, just reward for the young Augher player’s impressive Dr McKenna Cup campaign. Cassidy will line up alongside Enda McGinley at midfield.

Otherwise the Tyrone manager has selected a vastly experienced team, spearheaded by Stephen O’Neill and ‘Footballer of the Year’ Sean Cavanagh, both named in the full-forward line, alongside Owen Mulligan.

Martin Swift, back in the squad after leaving for the USA early last year, is included in the defence, alongside All-Ireland winners Justin McMahon, Davy Harte, Ryan McMenamin and Philip Jordan. Joe McMahon reverts to the half forward line

The Tyrone side features nine players who started last September’s All-Ireland final win over Kerry with skipper Brian Dooher, Pascal McConnell, Brian McGuigan, Ciarán Gourley and Damien McCaul ruled out by injury.

Wexford introduce three newcomers to League football for their home game against Armagh. Shane Cullen, David Fogarty and Graeme Molloyare given starting places. Cullen, from the Gusserane O’Rahilly’s club, is named at centre-forward, while Fogarty (St. Anne’s) and Molloy (St. James) are both featured in the half-back line. Otherwise the team has a familiar ring to it.

Kildare boss Kieran McGeeney has also named three debutants for his side’s Division Two NFL clash against Laois on Sunday. Goalkeeper Shane McCormack, corner-back Hugh McGrillan and corner-forward Eoghan O’Flaherty are all included, while Declan Brennan, a member of last year’s Leinster U21 championship winning team, makes his first competitive start at full-back.

Star turns Dermot Earley and John Doyle return to the fold, at left corner-forward and midfield respectively, having been spared O’Byrne Cup duties.

Veteran midfielder Ciarán McManus has been picked at full-back for Offaly’s Division 3 NFL clash against Roscommon. Newcomer Colin Egan starts at midfield, while Brian Connor, son of manager Ritchie, will line out at full-forward.

Left corner-back David Reilly and midfield player Gary O’Donnell make their League debuts for Galway who are away to Westmeath in Mullingar on Sunday.

Antrim manager Liam Bradley has handed debuts to centre-back Declan O’Hagan and wing forward Conor Murray for the visit of Wicklow in Division Four .

Kevin Walsh has three new names in his Sligo starting side for their NFL Division Four opener against Kilkenny on Sunday. Eugene Mullen lines out at midfield, Gary Gaughan will play at wing-forward and dual player Keith Raymond starts on the edge of the square.

Long-serving forward Denis Russell has been entrusted with the honour of captaining Clare footballers in the National League and Munster Championship campaigns. Russell will wear the skipper’s armband for the first time in Sunday’s NFL Division Four opener against Carlow at Dr Cullen Park. The new captain takes over the role from his St Senan’s Kilkee clubmate, Michael O’Shea.

Meanwhile, Galway manager John McIntyre has handed last year’s U21 hurling goalkeeper Eric Ward the No.1 jersey for Sunday’s Walsh Cup final against Kilkenny. The Mullagh clubman was drafted into the squad recently after injury ruled out James Skehill. He replaces Colm Callanan.

Ward is one of three changes in the Galway team, with Fergal Healy and Richie Murray lining up at midfield, as Eoin Forde is on U21 club duty and Kevin Hynes features in the Fitzgibbon Cup next week.
