Clincial Kildorrery cruise to victory over Delanys

Kildorrery 3-16 Delanys 1-7

Taking full advantage of Delanys’ shortcomings, Kildorrery moved in early for the kill and a superb ninth-minute goal from corner-forward Tom Monaghan launched last year’s junior runners-up on the high road to a runaway 15-point triumph.

Kildorrery were 1-3 to the good before Delanys got on the scoreboard when left half forward Dan Dineen kicked home a goal from the penalty spot at the end of the first quarter after centre-forward Paul Kelleher was fouled going through.

But this was only a brief token of defiance from Delanys as Kildorrery, with full-back Tom Paul Murphy, centre-back Michael Walsh and midfielder Peter O’Brien all on song turned the screws with a vengeance.

With their outstanding forward division of John Howard, Dave White, Stephen Coughlan, Tom Monaghan, Andrew O’Brien and Mia Ahern playing some delightful football, Kildorrery pounced for their second goal in the 20th minute, courtesy of the scintillating Monaghan who, two minutes later, set up Ahern for their third goal.

Kildorrery led by 3-7 to 1-0 at the break and although Delanys turned to play with the wind they never succeeded in staging a telling comeback. Continuing to rule the roost the polished north Cork side extended their lead to 13-points entering the final quarter.

With Howard and White in particular scoring freely, Kildorrery opened up an 18-points gap before Delanys enjoyed their best spell of a one-sided encounter with four unanswered points from Eoin Cullinane, Kevin Foley, Cullinane and team captain Mark O’Driscoll. But it was all too little too late for Delanys, who now meet Canovee next time out.
