Powerful St Brogan’s battle back to deny brave Boherbue

DESPITE being held scoreless in the first-half, St Brogan’s, Bandon stormed back after the break to sweep past Boherbue Comprehensive in the Munster Vocational Schools SFC final at windswept Mallow yesterday.

Things looked a trifle uncomfortable for the champions when they trailed by 1-3 at the interval. But they went on to retain the provincial title.

Playing into a strong wind, St Brogan’s did manage to create good opportunities, but excellent Boherbue keeper Billy Daly made some great saves.

With midfielder Dominic Creedon and left half forward Jason McCarthy working their socks off, St Brogan’s kept their opponents on a tight leash before Jerry O’Connor with a pointed free broke the deadlock in the 13th minute.

Gaining in confidence, Boherbue upped their game. Centre-forward Daniel Fitzgerald increased their lead with a free and then after a quick-silver forward move Mark Moynihan found the St Brogan’s net in the 22nd minute when he volleyed home a rebound from a brilliant save by keeper Chris White which denied John Corkery.

Fitzgerald added another point from a free to leave 1-3 between them at half time and the gauntlet was well and truly thrown down to St Brogan’s. With the dominant Creedon, full forward Daniel Twomey, corner forward Roy Payne and wing forward Ronan Crowley turning on the style after the resumption, however, St Brogan’s took little time in pegging back Boherbue.

Points from Gary Twomey, Ronan Crowley and Maurice Sexton reduced the deficit before Boherbue lifted the siege with another pointed free from Fitzgerald in the 42nd minute, the challengers only score of the second-half. But there was no stopping a stronger St Brogan’s side. Two pointed frees from full-forward Daniel Twomey followed by another from Roy Payne levelled matters in the 50th minute.

St Brogan’s took the lead for the first time two minutes later when Twomey was again on target from a placed ball.

Superb points from play by Twomey, Ronan Crowley and midfielder Peter Daly in the closing stages brought the curtain down impressively on St Brogan’s well-deserved triumph and on track to accomplish another Munster double.
