McGrath injury reports untrue

WATERFORD’S star centre-back Ken McGrath has dismissed reports that he will miss the Déise’s defence of their Allianz National Hurling League title.

Media reports over the weekend suggested that McGrath had been ordered to rest for three months with an ongoing groin injury, and would therefore miss the entire NHL campaign, but the Mt Sion clubman rubbished those reports yesterday.

“No, I don’t know where that story came from,” said McGrath.

“Last September I went to see Gerry McEntee (surgeon and former Meath footballer) and he said the best thing for the injury would be to rest it as soon as we went out of the club championship. That’s what I’ve done, I’ve done very little training since last October or so and given myself plenty of rest.

“At the moment I’m easing back into it, and I’ll see how it responds, but those stories about missing the league are off the mark. There was no set time to come back or games to miss, and I’ve already given the injury three or four months’ rest. If I’m okay to play in the league games I’ll play.

“In the last few weeks I’ve gotten back into it and done a bit of running, and it’s holding up well so far. I’ll see how it goes for the league.”

Waterford open their defence of their NHL title with a home game against Wexford on Sunday, February 10.
