Four points apiece from centre forward Pa Dineen and full forward Cian O’Riordan laid the foundations for Mallow’s triumph in a game which saw six Athea players issued with yellow cards. And if Clare referee Michael McGann had been a more forceful personality, one of two reds would also have been shown.

Athea managed only one point in the first half — a free from corner forward Gerard Aherne two minutes into stoppage time — and finished the game with just one point from play.
