GAA clubs infringe age rule

CLUBS which include 16-year-olds in their senior teams are infringing a rule which prevents young players from playing one grade above their age group.

Without being specific, Director-General Liam Mulvihill says he has been present at county championship games in recent weeks where this has happened.

“This is contrary to what’s in the Official Guide and contrary to all the best advice available to us from a medical point of view,” he commented. “I would applaud the stance taken by Joe Canning in that regard (in not making himself available to play senior with Galway). It’s a pity that more players coming through don’t decide to take a bit of a break from the game before they are pushed into such a regime at senior level.”
