O’Shaughnessy inspires Kilmallock to victory in senior championship

Yesterday, in round three, Kilmallock saw off rivals Patrickswell 2-16 to 1-11 in the Gaelic Grounds to signal their championship aspirations.

The Mike Houlihan-trained side were set on their way by a return of nine points from Andrew O’Shaughnessy. Patrickswell, last season’s beaten finalists, were ahead 1-6 to 0-6 at half time, their vital goal came in the 13th minute when Brian Geoghegan found the net after he was first to react to a long delivery. Backed by the wind, Barry Foley added four first-half points to ensure a half time lead for his side.

After the interval it was all Kilmallock. A blistering opening 10 minutes set them on their way into the last eight. Just two minutes into the second half came their first goal, when Gavin O’Mahony raced through the centre to beat his county colleague, Brian Murray. O’Shaughnessy added three points before Kilmallock raised their second green flag. This time full forward Paddy Connery profiting from a mix up in the Patrickswell full-back line with 20 minutes still to play, Kilmallock now led 2-10 to 1-7. As the rain came down Patrickswell rallied and three frees left just a goal between the sides. However, Kilmallock then pushed forward towards victory with three points in as many minutes. The only reply from Patrickswell was a point from sub William O’Dea as the winners finished out the tie with points from Eoin Ryan, Paddy Connery and Andrew O’Shaughnessy.

Elsewhere in the quarter-finals, intermediate champions Claughaun are making an impact on their return to the senior ranks. Last evening in Bruff they knocked out senior champions Bruree 0-11 to 0-8. The city side meet Murroe Boher in the quarter-final.

The third quarter-final will be between Geraldines and Croom. Geraldines, the east Limerick divisional side, booked their place in the last eight with a 1-22 to 1-17 shock win over Na Piarsaigh in Bruff. Centre-back and captain Mark Keane contributed seven frees to their winning tally.

The final quarter-final tie will be the pick of the round, both Adare and Ahane are recent champions and among the fancies for the Daly Cup this season. Ahane powered by Ollie, Niall and James Moran and Sean O’Connor easily saw off the challenge of Knockainey on Saturday evening in the Gaelic Grounds. They now face an Adare side managed by former Clare All-Ireland winner Ger O’Loughlin.

Elsewhere in the Limerick Club Championship, 2005 champions Garryspillane are in deep relegation trouble. They needed a last minute TJ Ryan free to salvage a draw against Doon in their relegation game. West Limerick side Killeedy await the loser of this replay in a play-off to decide who drops to the intermediate ranks.
