Rebels will rise again, vows Murphy

SHOWING the strain and emotion of defeat, Cork defender Brian Murphy rejected suggestions that yesterday’s All-Ireland SHC quarter-final replay defeat was the end of an era for the Rebels.

Rebels will rise again, vows Murphy

Though bitterly disappointed at their second loss to Waterford in this Championship season, Murphy is certain that this Cork side will bounce back and challenge for All-Ireland glory.

“I wouldn’t accept it is the end of an era,” he said.

“Of course we are hurting at the minute and it will take a while for us to recover. Every team loses. You cannot win every game. There is plenty of time to be thinking about next year, but this team is young enough to stay together.

“At the end of the day there was only a puck of a ball between the teams, and it’s been that way all season. Someone said to me this morning that eventually there will be eight to 10 points between us.

“But that doesn’t look like happening for the moment. We are very evenly matched, and if the sides were to meet again, it could go our way.

“That’s hurling for you.

“It will take us a couple of weeks to bounce back and we will. Cork have no other choice. We go back to our clubs now and get ready for the county championship.”

Murphy feels that his side could have won — had they been a little more fortunate in the first half.

He explained: “There was a wind out there and we didn’t maximise it, but you have to give great credit to Waterford for the way they took the game to us on the changeover. They have some exceptional players in the key areas and once they got the upper hand, and the two goals, we were always chasing the game.

“We may be accused of not talking our scores in that first half but goal chances were few and far between for us and I wouldn’t fault any of our forwards for having a go at goal when the opportunity presented itself.

“There is no point in going for a point if the goal chance is on. All credit to the Waterford backs, they saved the shots.

“Goals win matches as we all know and they got two which was the difference.”
