A LIMERICK newspaper has apologised to the Waterford hurling team and management for what it admitted was a “disrespectful and inappropriate” headline which it carried in the run-up to last Sunday’s Munster SHC final.

The Limerick Leader published the headline, which predicted that ‘Waterford will wilt’ in their provincial final clash with Limerick, with the statement attracting plenty of adverse comment — and not just on Shannonside.

In the aftermath of his side’s nine-point victory on Sunday, Waterford hat-trick hero Dan Shanahan referred immediately to the negative tone of the coverage, saying that team management had brought a copy of the newspaper into the team dressing-room to fire their players up ahead of the big game.
