Canning adamant on senior decision

JOE CANNING has dismissed speculation he is to join the Galway senior hurling squad this week.

Canning adamant on senior decision

The Portumna youngster had a magnificent Fitzgibbon Cup campaign with LIT scoring 5-33 in the four games played, and clearly has come under increased pressure to change his mind about accepting Ger Loughnane’s invitation to join the Galway senior set up.

“I don’t know where the talk of me joining the Galway senior squad has come from, but my plans have not changed,” he said.

“Once my exams are over, I intend taking six weeks out and doing some travelling. I will be available for the county Under-21 team and the club for the Galway championship, but I intend waiting until 2008 before joining up with the senior squad — provided of course I’m still wanted.”

Referring to the Fitzgibbon Cup win by LIT, Canning said it was a wonderful achievement and one he thoroughly enjoyed.

“The fact that it was played over a short space of time meant a team had to be its very best in every match,” he said. “It was a very tough campaign as we had to beat four of the better colleges to win it. It’s a medal I will cherish.”
