Tipp star O’Brien ‘stable’ after crash

It is understood the Tipp attacker sustained serious leg injuries which will cast doubt over his place on the Tipperary side for the upcoming championship.

He played a major role in helping Toomevara win the Tipperary and Munster club titles this year and it was expected he would be named captain of the senior county side.

The accident occurred around 6am at Daly’s Cross, a dangerous junction on the main N7 Nenagh-Limerick road, when the car O’Brien was travelling in was in collision with a lorry.

The hurler is thought to have suffered serious leg injuries in the accident and was conveyed to the Mid-West Regional Hospital.

Mr O’Brien was the driver of the vehicle and was returning from Limerick after an evening out in the city.

On Wednesday evening he travelled with the entire Toomevara panel to train at the University of Limerick’s sports campus.

Freezing temperatures are thought to have lead to dangerous road conditions.

The 24-year-old sales representative has starred for Toomevara this year in the north, county and Munster championships and is an integral part of the Toomevara set-up.

The prolific forward has also starred in the blue and gold of Tipperary and has lined out in a number of positions in the forward line in recent years.
