GAA bosses urged to stand up for club players
Direction must come from the top, he says, because county committees are “unwilling to grasp the nettle”.
“Is it any wonder a club player can go to America for the summer and miss no championship game at home?’’ he asks. “It is also now a fact that club players are walking away or playing one code only, while clubs are finding it difficult to get officers, team mentors and player loyalty.”
Ring warns GAA volunteerism is fast becoming a thing of the past.
“Most in the GAA are aware of the problems of professionalism in sport, the cult of the manager and the win-at-all-costs philosophy. This concept has to be challenged and emphasis put into participation and enjoyment.”
