Waterford prepare to name senior hurling management team

A four man sub-committee of the board, headed by chairman Pat Flynn, have concluded their interviews, and will present their recommendation in Dungarvan.

Club delegates, however, will not be compelled to accept that recommendation. It will be open to them to make proposals, and if necessary force a vote, to decide who takes charge for next season.

Officialdom is remaining tightlipped but it is believed that four people have been interviewed including the manager for the last five years, Justin McCarthy.

Former Mount Sion and Waterford star Jim Greene, who has made no secret of his desire to land the job, was also interviewed, and the belief is that he and McCarthy are the frontrunners.

Under the Corkman, Waterford have won two Munster championships, 2002 and 2004.

In a report to the County Board’s September meeting, McCarthy said this year’s team had improved significantly on 2005 and suggested there is still more to come from them.

“Without our injury problems, and with a little bit of luck, we could have beaten Cork in the All-Ireland semi- final’, he said.

Apart from eight county championship wins as a player with Mount Sion, Greene was also manager to five other county championship winning teams. He also managed Waterford to Munster minor and U21 championships and Mount Sion to All-Ireland Sevens titles.
