Former Royal All-Ireland winners Colm Coyle and Tommy Dowd are both strong contenders, while Meath minor boss Dudley Farrell and Paddy Carr, who finished a poor third of three in the same contest last year, are outsiders.

All five have stood their ground after being nominated, but four others, Gerry McEntee, Liam Hayes, Mattie Kerrigan and Paul Kenny are non-runners. Although Barry has expressed a strong desire to continue into a second term and feels some progress was made over the last few months, he can expect a strong challenge from Coyle and Dowd
