Good news for Dubs as Magee expected to be fit

THE good news just keeps on coming for Dublin. Influential midfielder Darren Magee is expected to be fit in time for the Leinster football final against either Offaly or Wexford in three weeks time.

The Kilmacud player had a cast removed from a broken wrist last Wednesday and, although he sat on the subs bench against Laois, it was unlikely he was going to be risked at any stage of the semi-final. News of his recovery will be welcomed, considering Dublin struggled badly in the centre-field exchanges at the weekend until Laois’ Padraig Clancy had to retire after 23 minutes with a broken collar bone.

Magee was in inspired form for Dublin prior to his injury and would offer a more orthodox option alongside Ciarán Whelan in midfield than the versatile Shane Ryan.

“It’s a matter of rehabilitating the wrist now,” said selector Brian Talty. “The thing is very stiff. He’s going to work on that like mad now to see if we can get him back for three weeks’ time. We’d be reasonably confident. There’s a good medical team there.”

Paul Caffrey will also have another midfielder, Denis Bastick, available for the provincial decider. He was suspended for the win over Laois after being sent off in Dublin’s Leinster JFC semi-final defeat by Louth.

Captain Collie Moran, who has been dogged all year by a groin injury, returned to the bench last weekend, as did corner-back Stephen O’Shaughnessy after his own shoulder problems.

By the time July 16 swings around, both men should be fit and pushing for places in the first 15.

“Shaugho is grand,” said Talty. “It’s just a question of him getting games at this stage. The lads will be back playing with their clubs (tonight) and some of them on Wednesday night. It will be good for a few of them to get those games under their belts.

“Everything came good and then Laois lost Clancy as well,” said Talty. “He missed that goal early on although Stephen Cluxton did well to put him off. Look, some days it comes good like that, others it doesn’t come at all.”
