Hiding his light in the corner

WHY is it always the forwards? Yesterday, Joe Deane was named official man-of-the-match, and Joe did shine — scoring eight points from eight shots on goal, and providing a brilliant assist for Brian Corcoran’s goal.

But why is it always the forwards? Talk to any of the Cork players after this game, talk to the Cork manager, and they will all point to the contribution of one man.

Donal Óg Cusack was magnificent with four great saves and his gutsy puck-outs, but he wasn’t the man. Ronan Curran and John Gardiner were also high up the list and were probably in consideration. But the man-of-the-match for Cork yesterday, in the eyes of those who pay close attention to such things, was corner-back Brian Murphy.
