Second-half goals turn tide for Youghal

A WHIRLWIND start to the second half paved the way for Youghal’s exciting victory over Inniscarra in the Evening Echo Cork Co Premier IHC at Riverstown yesterday.

The sides were level at 0-5 apiece at half time but two snap goals from full-forward Andrew Murphy and left corner-forward Richard Cunningham within eight minutes of the restart turned an excellent game Youghal’s way.

Although missing some of their top players through injury, Youghal triumphed over adversity in admirable style and outstanding performances from full-back Vincent Murray and left half-back Stephen Twomey smoothed their passage to the third round.

Inniscarra, with Nicky O’Regan impressing on the right flank of attack, more than held their own in the first half. On occasions they looked the more impressive hurling side and led by two points after the opening quarter.

But Youghal, with centre-forward Eoin Coleman unerring from both frees and play, doggedly hung in there and levelled the game for the third time just before the break.

Given the nature of the first-half proceedings, when it was nip and tuck all the way, it was anybody’s game at this juncture.

But this first-round tie was turned on its head with a vengeance. Within 50 seconds of the resumption, Andrew Murphy raced on to a long clearance from Vincent Murray and with a great angled ground drive he billowed the Inniscarra net.

Scorer-in-chief Eoin Coleman quickly followed with two points. Youghal were on a high and with Inniscarra on the ropes the sea-siders moved in for the knock-out punch when Cunningham soloed through before hitting the ball under the diving body of goalkeeper Padraigh O’Sullivan.

For good measure Nigel Roche and Coleman, with another pointed free, extended Youghal’s lead to 2-9 to 0-5 before Inniscarra could recover.

Inniscarra went down with all guns blazing as points from Dan O’Connell and O’Regan helped them to regain their composure with nine points separating the teams entering the final quarter.

With the impressive O’Regan showing the way, they reeled off five points without reply to reduce the deficit to four points with time running out.

However, Inniscarra lacked the penetration to garner the goal they needed and Youghal, coming again with a late surge, sealed victory with a pointed free from Coleman and another from play by team captain Damien Ring.
