Gardiner and Ó hAilpín to get U21 call
The game was postponed because of the players' involvement in the All-Ireland SHC semi-final replay against Wexford, but it's understood discussions have taken place between the parties concerned about the players playing on Thursday night.
Should Cork win, the final against Kerry is down for decision on Wednesday, September 3 11 days before the All-Ireland senior hurling final and that would pose a far more serious dilemma for the selectors of both teams. Cork may well seek a postponement if they are involved in the football final.
The two players were outstanding in Na Piarsaigh's victory over Dohenys in the county SFC at the weekend, contributing 1-6 between them as the earlier conquerors of Nemo Rangers advanced to the quarter-final thanks to Ó hAilpín late winning goal.
The senior hurlers have been guaranteed three clear weeks to the All-Ireland final following the weekend's championship games in which the 21 players involved came through unscathed.
Four of the senior squad Brian Murphy, Martin Coleman, Jason Barrett and Brendan Lombard will be involved in Saturday's All-Ireland IHC final against Kilkenny at Walsh Park.
Meanwhile, the venues for Saturday's TG4 All-Ireland Senior Ladies football championship quarter-finals have been announced. Galway will play Tyrone in Pearse Park, Longford (throw-in 1.45), with Dublin and Monaghan in action at the same venue at 3.10.
Cusack Park in Ennis also hosts a double-header, with Munster champions Kerry facing Laois at 1.45, while Mayo are in action against Waterford at 3.10.
