Farrell goal spurs Bunclody to shock win over Starlights

THE opening round of the Wexford senior football championship brought its quota of weekend shocks, with reigning champions Starlights going down to a point defeat to HWH/Bunclody, while last year’s beaten finalists, Sarsfields, lost out to Bannow-Ballymitty.

HWH/Bunclody 1-6 Starlights 0-8

A GOAL from full-forward Tommy Farrell helped HWH/Bunclody to a surprise one-point victory over Starlights, who were left to rue a number of missed chances.

However, the eventual winners, with Paul Finn and David Carton impressing in midfield, made the better use of their possession, and only the points of inter-county full-forward John Hudson keeping the Starlights in contention to the final whistle.

HAVING led 0-7 to 0-1 at the interval, Bannow-Ballymitty remained in control to fashion a deserved four-point victory over Wexford town side Sarsfields, who failed to create a worthwhile impression, with Darren Browne missing out on a penalty, as they struggled throughout.

St Anne’s 1-10 Duffry Rovers 0-9

A FIRST-HALF goal from Redmond Barry set St Anne’s up for a comfortable victory over Duffry Rovers.

St Anne’s led 1-5 to 0-7 at half-time and with David Fogarty and brother Jonathan chipping in with two points apiece, they easily secured victory.
