Sheehan, Cooper start for Kingdom

BRIAN SHEEHAN and Colm Cooper will start for Kerry against Laois in the Allianz NFL semi-final at Killarney on Sunday.

Sheehan takes over the left-half forward position from Eoin Brosnan, while Copper, introduced as a substitute in last weekend’s draw with Dublin and kicking the equaliser which ensured knockout qualification for the Kingdom, starts at right-corner forward, with team captain Declan O’Sullivan moving to full forward and Ronan O’Connor taking over the left-corner forward duties from Michael Frank Russell.

Chris Conway (torn ligaments) and Aidan Fennelly (hamstring) have been ruled out of the Laois side, but manager Mick O’Dwyer will not reveal his hand until just before the start.

For their semi-final clash with Connacht neighbours Galway at Castlebar on Sunday, Mayo are unchanged from the side that drew with All-Ireland champions Tyrone last weekend.

Gary Connaughton returns in goal for Westmeath, who take on Donegal in the Allianz NFL Division 2 semi-final at Breffni Park on Sunday. John Keane returns from a bout of flu to take his place at left-corner back. Regular wing back, Derek Heavin is still absent through injury, with Gary Glennon continuing at left-half back.

Former Kildare player, Cormac Davey, who started his first match for the Midlanders in last Sunday’s win over Louth, retains his position at right-corner back.

Tyrone will be without two central figures for Saturday’s Ulster Under-21 Football Championship final. Centre back Niall Kerr and centre forward Mickey Murphy miss the Ballybofey clash with Derry due to injury.

Team captain and senior panellist Murphy has a hip injury, while Kerr is suffering from damaged ankle ligaments. Marc Cunningham and Martin McCreesh come into a reshuffled side, both in the half-forward line. Justin McMahon moves from midfield to centre back, while Raymond Mulgrew, another senior squad member, switches from wing forward to midfield.

Meanwhile, the Down senior hurling selectors have given a vote of confidence to the team which ran Wexford so close last weekend for Sunday’s Division 1 relegation play-off with Antrim in Omagh.

The game, switched from Casement Park, will see Down looking to build on what was their best display of the season when they lost to Wexford by 1-11 to 0-18.
