Byrne keeps Abbey at bay as Doon taste victory

Doon C.B.S.1-12 Abbey C.B.S.2-7

And it was just as well that the Limerick side began in such fashion as Abbey CBS from Tipperary made them fight all the way with a spirited display, particularly in the second-half.

In those opening exchanges Doon, powered by an outstanding half-back line in George Allis, Denis Moloney and Andrew Hickey made most of the running, and by the 15th minute they had notched 1-5 with Abbey’s only response being a surprise goal from a 35 yards free by Timmy Dalton.

Doon went on to score further points in the run up to half-time yet, despite their territorial advantage, they only held a four point lead at the interval. Abbey had come back into it with a great 28th minute goal from Tony O’Brien, whose overhead strike from the edge of the square, following a delightful John Kelly free, gave goalkeeper Brendan Byrne no chance. The Doon mentors should have been the happier on the change of ends, but any notions they may have harboured of an easy win were quickly dispelled when the Abbey boys displayed far greater conviction Scores were hard to come by in view of the close marking and showery weather conditions, and Doon had to settle for just three points from Timmy O’Donoghue and two beauties from Paudie McNamara - the latter having been set up by centre back Denis Moloney who finished the tie in storming fashion.

Doon’s Brendan Byrne was the busier of the two goalkeepers as the half progressed and a series of timely saves kept the Abbey at bay.

The margin was down to two points on a few occasions, as well-taken scores from Timmy Dalton (three frees) and team captain Barry Grogan increased the pressure on Doon. Nevertheless, the Limerick side regrouped, and with Moloney starring at centre back, they held on for a deserved victory.

Tony O’Brien had the last say for Abbey CBS but they were still two points adrift Willie Horgan sounded the final whistle - much to the relief of Doon
